Keep Inspiring Young Leaders to Protect Our Oceans

Introduction

Hola Mundo Programs is a youth leadership and environmental education initiative founded by Adriana Chambliss in Pompano Beach, Florida. What began in 2004 as a bilingual educational program has grown into an innovative model that combines environmental stewardship, leadership development, community service, and the arts. Three times per year students participate in hands-on environmental learning experiences along the coastline, where they actively protect local beaches, develop leadership skills, and transform collected debris into public art that communicates environmental awareness to the community.

The Need

Florida’s coastline is one of the state’s greatest natural treasures, yet pollution and litter continue to threaten marine ecosystems and coastal communities. At the same time, young people today face a growing disconnection from nature and limited opportunities for hands-on civic engagement.

Hola Mundo Programs addresses both challenges by empowering students to:

  • Protect their local environment

  • Develop leadership and collaboration skills

  • Participating in community service

  • Engage in environmental education

  • Use creativity and art to inspire change

The Program

The program is offered three times per years and serves elementary, middle, and high school students in Pompano Beach.

Key program components include:

Environmental Stewardship

Students participate in regular beach cleanups, learning about marine ecosystems, recycling, and sustainability.

Leadership Development

Students in grades 5th–12th develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills while mentoring younger participants. Turning Trash into Treasure Students collect debris from the beach and collaborate with local artists to transform the materials into meaningful public art installations. Each year, students present their environmental message and artwork proposal to the Public Art Committee of the City of Pompano Beach before the final installation ceremony.

Community Partnerships

Hola Mundo Programs has successfully collaborated with community partners including:

  • AshBritt, which donated recycling bins placed along recreational beach areas

  • The City of Pompano Beach

  • Local educators, artists, and volunteers

These partnerships demonstrate the program’s ability to unite students, local government, and private organizations in a shared mission of environmental responsibility.
